What is hospital financial assistance?
Many hospitals reduce or forgive bills for patients who qualify, often called charity care. Under federal tax rules, tax-exempt hospitals must keep and publish a written financial assistance policy. Each hospital sets its own rules, and the hospital decides who qualifies.
How do I check whether my bill could qualify?
When we see signs that financial assistance could help, your results offer a quick eligibility check. Enter your yearly household income before tax and the number of people in your household. rekupr shows where that sits against the federal poverty guidelines. Nothing is submitted, your income is not stored, and the estimate is not an approval or a promised discount.
How does rekupr prepare my request?
Answer a few questions: household income and size, your state, and whether you are uninsured. Check the hospital's name and mailing address, which we take from your bill where we can. rekupr then prepares a request letter you can review and edit. Where your state has a hospital discount law that applies to you, we cite it in your letter.
Does a financial assistance request cost anything?
No. The eligibility check and the request letter are free.
Who sends the request to the hospital?
You do. Download the letter, send it to the hospital's billing or financial assistance address, and keep a copy. rekupr does not contact the hospital for you.
How do I track the hospital's answer?
Your request has its own case, which keeps every letter you sent and every reply from the hospital. When you get a final answer, record the outcome: Approved: Free Care, Approved: Discount, Denied, or More Documents Requested.
